The Basilicata, the ancient Lucania, is a region surrounded from two seas. To the west, between Campania and Calabria, it is bathed from the Tirrenian sea, on whose steep and rocky coasts shows itself, simply and with the uncontaminated purity of the region to which it belongs, that pearl of the seaside tourism that is Maratea. To their shoulders, in the Flat of Metaponto, the imposing remains of the Greek civilization created in its colonial expansion in italian earth between the VIII and V th century v.Ch. It is crossed from north to south from the Lucano Apennine, whose mountains don’t exceed the two thousand meters, exception made for the Pollino Massive ,at the border with Calabria, and for the Sirino, to SW.

Locality:

MATERA:
The city of Matera rises in a characteristic landscape, with cliffs to a deep ravine, under which flows the Gravina torrent. It is a city with many faces, of which the most known is shurely that one of the stones, that the Unesco has recognized like “patrimony of the humanity to hand on to the future generations”. The stones are dominated from the Cathedral, monument of the medieval period. The stones accommodate to their inside the evocative museum of the peasant civilization . Around Matera, in the materana Murgia, lies the Park of the rocky Churches.

IONIC COAST
The ionic coast , long 35 km ca., from Metaponto to Nova Sires introduces opposite characteristics to the triennian one. The last extension of the plain that extends from the low materana hill towards the ionian sea, offers to the visitor vaste areas of smooth golden sand ,wide sandy beaches and stones in the coast feature to south that watches towards the National Park of the Pollino. Here, in the I'VIII th.century v.Ch.,was built the cities of the Megale Hellas (Magna Greece): Metaponto, Heraclea (today Policoro), Siris and Pandosia, which accommodated personages like Pitagora and which were scene of terrible battles, like that one from Pirro against the Romans. The signs of this important historical phase are visible in the archaeological diggings of Metaponto and Policoro and in theirs important museums, so rich of peaces that, although the large expository space, they don’t succeed to find a place for all of them.

TIRRENIC COAST
The lucana tirrenic coast is comprised in a feature of approximately 30 km between the tip of the Crivi, little more to the north than Acquafredda, and the Beach “of to Gnola”, to south of the Sand bank of Castrocucco. Reaching from the Walnut valley, through Trecchina, suddenly the green landscape of prodigious forests dives themselves into the sea. A follow of small bays, capes, half islands breaks off the intense blue of this drawn of Tirrenian sea. Maratea, scattered on the mountains and long the coast, seems to be there for a long time.
